Answer engine optimization vs ChatGPT ads

Both are about being present when someone asks an AI instead of a search box. One you earn, the other you buy. Most people arrive looking for the first and do not know the second exists.

52 countries eligible. Ads inside ChatGPT since Feb 2026. 24 character headlines. No keyword bidding. $25 a day minimum. $1B run rate in under 200 days. Fixed price to start. Month to month after. You keep the account

The short version

Earned mention, or bought placement

AEO is trying to be the answer. Advertising is appearing next to it. They look similar from the outside and they are almost nothing alike to run.

Answer engine optimization

You earn it

You write things worth citing, you get mentioned by sources the model trusts, and over months your name starts turning up inside answers. No invoice, no switch, no guarantee. When it works it is the cheapest traffic there is. Getting there is the slow part, and nobody can promise you the outcome.

ChatGPT ads

You buy it

You open an Ads Manager account, describe the conversations you want to show up in, and pay for the placement. It runs in days, it is measurable, and you can stop it on a Tuesday afternoon. It costs money every day it runs, which is the whole trade.

Side by side

The differences that decide which one belongs in your quarter, rather than the ones that sound good in a deck.

Which first

It depends on your timeline, not your budget

This is the only question that matters, and it has a boring answer that depends on how long you can wait to be wrong.

Ads first if you need an answer this quarter

A 30 day test gives you a cost per conversion and a yes or no. AEO cannot do that. If your board wants to know whether AI surfaces are real for your category, buying the data is faster than earning it.

AEO first if you have no ad budget at all

The floor is $25 a day. If that is genuinely out of reach, put the effort into content and citations instead and come back to ads when there is money to test with.

Both if you can, and in that order

Ads tell you which version of your offer people click. That is the same intelligence your content team is guessing at. Run the test, then write the pages around what won.

What buying it actually involves

The paid side, briefly

If you have only ever done the organic side, here is what changes when you start paying. None of it works the way Google does.

No keywords

There is no keyword list to bid on. You write context hints, which describe the situation someone is in when they talk to ChatGPT. This is the part every Google buyer gets wrong first. How hints work

24 characters

A title of up to 24 characters and a line of up to 48. That is the entire pitch, which is less room than a headline in a blog post. The creative limits

Your legal entity has to be registered in an eligible market. No agency can lend you its eligibility, so this is worth checking before anything else. Check yours

Questions

What people ask us

What is answer engine optimization?

AEO is the work of getting your business mentioned inside the answers that AI assistants write, rather than in a list of blue links. In practice it is content, clear factual claims a model can lift, and being cited by sources the model already trusts. It is organic, so nobody invoices you for a placement and nobody guarantees you one.

Is AEO the same as ChatGPT ads?

No. AEO tries to earn a mention inside the answer. ChatGPT ads buy a paid placement alongside it. One is organic and slow, the other is bought and immediate. They are different budgets, different teams and different timelines, and they do not compete with each other.

Should I do AEO or ChatGPT ads first?

If you need to know within a month whether AI surfaces are worth your attention, run ads. They are measurable and reversible. If you are playing a 12 month game and have content capacity, do both, because ads tell you which messages land and that is the same intelligence AEO needs.

Can an agency guarantee I appear in ChatGPT answers?

No, and be careful with anyone who says otherwise. Nobody controls what a model says about you. A paid placement is the only part of the surface that can actually be bought.

Do ChatGPT ads help my AEO?

Not directly. Buying ads does not make the model like you more. What it does give you is fast data on which phrasings of your offer people respond to, and that is worth more to your content than another guessed keyword list.

One honest warning about both

Nobody controls what a model says about your company, and anybody selling you a guaranteed mention inside an AI answer is selling you something they cannot deliver. The paid placement is the only part of this surface that can actually be bought, which is exactly why it is worth understanding before your competitors do.

We only do the paid side. If AEO is what you need, that is a content problem and we are not the right people for it.
